About Server Uptime and Downtime
- NOTE: downtime refers to the site not being accessible at all through the browser. If the site is just really slow, see this article.
- SECOND NOTE: it may be that the server isn't down, but just that your domain name registration has lapsed. See the first part of this article.
The server is the computer that holds a copy of your website. The server is located in Dallas, TX and is managed 24/7 by a team of technicians and server admins. If something bad happens to the server, you can be sure that by the time you notice it, the techs are already on it. Any time anyone has ever contacted us to tell us about any server downtime, by the time we have contacted the server techs, they have always already been working on the problem.
Computers malfunction, so the server going down is a fact of life. Usually it will last for just a few minutes. Sometimes, such as in the case of a severe hardware malfunction, it can last a few hours. In extremely rare cases where the datacenter itself is damaged (fire, flood, tornado), it could last several hours or days (this has never happened in our experience).
A portion of the fee you pay Valued Websites goes towards hosting. This goes toward what's known as a "shared server". Shared servers are inexpensive and generally work well. You're guaranteed to get 99.9% uptime, which translates to an average downtime of about 43 minutes per month or 516 minutes per year. Of course, if you have 11 straight months of 100% uptime and then on the 12th month you have 516 minutes of downtime, it's quite noticeable.
In order to get better uptime, we offer 99.99% uptime using "cloud hosting". With this type of hosting, your website resides on multiple computers scattered around the country, so if one goes down, another instantly steps up to the plate. With this hosting downtime is limited to on average 4 minutes per month or 52 minutes per year. However, it adds $30/month ($25/month if paid yearly) to the base cost of your website. It comes with 10 gigabytes of disk space.
